How I Use Star Wars in the Classroom

As a scholar of religion, and a life-long Star Wars junkie, I am always seeking new ways of combining the two together. When I began teaching religious studies two years ago as a part-time instructor, I knew I had to find some way to fit Star Wars into my lessons. It was tricky at first, but I made it work and do so whenever possible, particularly in my introductory classes. When discussing the concept of "Sacred Reality" with my students, many of whom are freshmen, I like to show clips from Star Wars and have a conversation about The Force with them. Using the original films, and some of the key points that Obi-Wan and Yoda present to Luke about The Force is a great way to get my students thinking about what "Sacred Reality" is in a tangible way. When discussing Taoism with my World Religion students, I also like to play a game called "Who said it...Yoda or Lao Tzu" where I provide quotes from one or the other and my students have to guess who originally said it. My dream is to develop a class on religion and Star Wars...and perhaps even publish some articles on the subject as well.
