Star Wars Reads Day 2014

Roper Mountain Science Center

On Saturday, October 11th, the Rogues of Star Wars in the Classroom teamed up with the staff of Roper Mountain Science Center to present one of the nation's largest Star Wars Reads Day events with nearly 1500 guests in attendance. This was the third Star Wars event coordinated by The Rogues of Star Wars in the Classroom for Roper Mountain since 2008. Visitors were treated to numerous exhibits scattered throughout the center that included "Star Wars and the Hero 's Journey," "Star Wars Tech," "The Ecology of Star Wars," "The Underwater Worlds of Naboo," "The Science of Flight," "The Basics of Rocketry," "Fun with Foam," and more. Furthermore, there were numerous hands-on activities for the younglings that allowed them to make-and-take rockets, hovercrafts, and rubber band-powered airplanes. In the planetarium, guests watched "Astronaut," narrated by Ewan McGregor and "Stars: Powerhouses of the Universe," narrated by Mark Hamill. Members of the 501st Carolina Garrison and the local clan of the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club added to the fun. There were story times for the younglings throughout the day and Barnes and Noble at Greenridge put together an awesome bookfair that provided guests the opportunity to pick up some terrific Star Wars titles, including books by fellow Rogues Ian Doescher and Ryder Windham. Overall, it was another amazing day of Force-filled fun and learning and we look forward to doing it again next year!
