I teach a spiraled curriculum of ancient history to my 6th graders, so by not moving chronologically, I am able to focus on conceptual learning. I find that all major civilizations share common characteristics, no matter if the civilizations are in the real world or not. I often use Star Wars to introduce the concepts (geographic features, social structure, economic choices, etc.) that I teach, so that I can increase the "buy in" from my students. Just this past year we were able to incorporate robotics engineering and programming with the Sphero 2.0. To develop the necessary skills for that, I utilized the Hour of Code program for the Force Awakens.
