How I Use Star Wars in the Classroom

I have used Star Wars in many ways! I started out as a secondary English Literature teacher and I often related texts to Star Wars for explanation and writing stimulus. I then became a Learning Support specialist, working with children experiencing dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism, language, emotional, communication, behavioural and social difficulties. I taught first in the UK and then in Switzerland. I work with children of all ages. I always have pictures of Yoda, other heroes and spacecraft from Star Wars and other sci-fi films up in my classroom, and children always notice and connect to them the first time they enter the room. For children who have always been excluded by mainstream education, this engagement is particularly important. I have enabled children to develop communication and social skills by teaching how to roleplay and write their own dice-based games. I have used resources from Star Wars for basic maths and referred to Yoda when counselling. I have used Star Wars spacecraft as a stimulus for design activities.
