As an access services supervisor at the circulation desk, I interact with college students on a daily basis. Every day I learn something new and they learn something new with me. In previous libraries, my past library instruction sessions mainly involved teaching students how to write citations and conduct basic research. Teaching MLA and APA citations can be a dry subject, but I found that students learned better when the material was interactive and current.

My method involved a simple Word document with scrambled words on a slide (Title, author, publisher, and so on). Together, the class and I would put the citation in the proper order, but what made the citations so special and fun were the Star Wars references. A book on "How to use the Force" by Yoda Master and published by Jedi Press was a refreshing spin on something that most students tend to find boring. We would then apply that to existing material and students easily arranged the citations in the proper order. Nothing made me more excited than students learning the importance of crediting work while being exposed to Star Wars.
