In my comparative politics and U.S. government classes I show the Original Trilogy. The movies illustrate several political and governmental concepts. After we watch the OT I ask them to point out examples of key vocabulary terms from the film like; rebellion, imperialism, fascism, etc. Most of my students have never seen the OT before. We also use the films analyze the political and economic climate of the late 70s and early 80s. I have the students research what was happening in the U.S. at the time the films were released and how this may have effected their popularity and influenced Lucas' writing. We go further into discussion of the popular of science fiction during tense times in international politics. There are several clips from the pre-quals that I show regarding the senate, debate, foreign policy, and military action. Each year students always look forward to my Star Wars government lessons.
