Bio

I have been in Special Education since 2000. For most of my career I worked as a Behavioral Specialist. I am a National Senior Trainer for Life Space Crisis Intervention and do trainings all over the world. I have a Master’s Degree in Education and just recently went back to school to get my teacher’s certificate. I first saw Star Wars when it came out in 1977 and have been hooked since. I am currently raising three young Star Wars fans. I use Star Wars to reach my students and even teach a Jewish Values in Science Fiction class at my local synagogue with a heavy emphasis on Star Wars.

How I Use Star Wars in the Classroom

I work with primarily ED and BD students who are significantly below grade level. I work Star Wars in all the time because it is the only thing that almost everyone has in common is that they have seen Star Wars. When I taught Shakespeare I used Ian Doescher’s wonderful William Shakespeare’s Star Wars. I used the educator’s guide on the Quirk books website and created content questions. I also had the students make a trailer for the book comprising of student actors, snipets from the audiobook and clips from the movie. In Geography we spend a week creating a new Star Wars planet complete with government, species, landforms and cultures. We use the complete Star Wars Atlas as a reference.
