How I Use Star Wars in the Classroom

In the past I've used light sabers as pointers, explained behaviors using Star Wars Characters, used the Jedi system as a way foer students to share their understanding (Youngling, Padawan, Knight, and Master). Yoda (my fave) was the question master. He would ask questions when students wanted to know more and encourage them to seek out the answer for themselves before asking again to check their understanding. I'm eager to learn more about how others have used Star Wars in the classroom too. I've recently finished a Master's degree in Special Education and am looking forward to implenting the same ideas and more with my K-3 students that have special needs. My son and I also recently earned our black belt in Taekwondo and have been using Star Wars in the Taekwondo classes I teach and he assist with. My son is a Darth Vader fan, I'm a yoda fan. At 16 years of age, he is way bigger than me and only wears a black uniform. Being that I'm smaller, I often explain that I have to be smarter when sparring against someone larger. The students totally understand this concept when explained this way and remember the reasoning for various moves much longer. It is awesome how similar the philosophies of Star Wars and Taekwondo can be. :)
