How I Use Star Wars in the Classroom

When I was teaching English, I had a heroes unit and I incorporated Star Wars: A New Hope. We discussed symbolism, good vs. evil, plot, heroic characteristics, and compare/contrast with other heroes that we read. In the library, I have celebrated Star Wars reads day and this year we did Star Wars trivia and we drew winners to win Star Wars books. Dan and I also hosted a Google Hangout and invited area schools to view. We discussed Star Wars memories, encouraged viewers and students and staff to read an excerpt from their favorite Star Wars book. The drama department read and recorded a scene from Ian Doescher's Empire Striketh Back.
