Bio

I am a teacher at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. I have been teaching there since 2005. I am also a graduate of the school and I absolutely love my job! I was born the same year that Return of the Jedi was released and I have been infatuated with Star Wars since the very beginning! I am also a music director for our Basilica and play the organ. Believe me, many times when I have been alone practicing in the church, the Imperial March may have come out of the organ pipes! My interests vary widely and I am always interested in meeting new people and sharing ideas. I am glad to be part of the Rogues!

How I Use Star Wars in the Classroom

I use Star Wars in particularly two of my courses. In my AP History class, I have the students read The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli. To explain to them the ultimate Machiavellian character, we focus on Emperor Palpatine. I have a paper for the students that we read over and then they give me examples of how he fits the characteristics of each chapter of the book, before they compare the Machiavellian characters to real life people. I am fortunate to have many students who have experience with Star Wars. As much as I use Star Wars in that class, I actually have a class designed around Star Wars. The students even call it the Star Wars class! I bill it as Pop Culture though, just to keep the administration happy! We watch several movies that focus on various themes. The students also have a wide array of projects. Star Wars, though, is the main focus as there is so much to discuss - philosophy, religion, characters, environment, music, technology, lore, tolerance, politics - you name it, Star Wars has it. The students have various assignments focused on these topics and we watch several of the movies over the course of the semester and have round table discussions. It is a dream come true for me!!!!
